Over the next week, this site will become primarily an e-commerce site for selling songbooks and digital music by our published artists. The main url is still www.berlenmusic.com, but the site will have extra security enabled to ensure the privacy of information entered while shopping and paying for goods. There will be a link back to the information contained on the current page about the services we provide and the latest news items.

We are pleased to announce that Pipe Street Songbook is now being distributed by The Book Band . The Book Band specializes in selling books by small and independent publishers at festivals, trade shows, events and over the internet.

BerLen Music will be appearing at the Eden Mills Writers’ festival, held in Eden Mills, ON on Sunday, September 20th from noon ’til 6 pm. In addition to carrying “Pipe Street Songbook”, we will also be carrying “With Knowing Eyes: Canadian women in song” by friend and fellow publsher Beverlie Robertson. The first official Pipe Street Songbook Launch!

The James Gordon anthology songbook is near completion and will be titled “James Gordon - Pipe Street Songbook”. The book contains fifty of James’ most requested songs and also contains extensive material gathered from interviews conducted with James specifically for this project. In the interviews, James talks in great detail about the origin of specific songs, about the writing process and about his evolution as a songwriter.

The books will be ready to be shipped by March 1st, but in the meantime may be ordered online using Paypal. The book sells for $30 CDN, plus GST and a shipping fee. The total cost including tax and delivery is $36.49. There are plans for several book launches in the spring. Click here to go to the order page.

James Gordon Anthology Songbook

James Gordon lives two blocks away from my home in Guelph, Ontario, Canada and he is a songwriter. A very, very prolific songwriter. He has written serious songs, entertaining songs, songs that educate you about the history of people, places and events, songs that arouse your anger about social inequities and songs that make you feel slightly better about yourself and the universe.

James started out as founder of Canada’s premier folk group, Tamarack. With this durable trio he toured every corner of the continent, recorded fourteen albums, and made countless television and radio appearances. He has become well-known for his original songs about Canada’s identity and heritage. He was a regular songwriting contributor to the CBC radio programmes “Ontario Morning” and “Basic Black”. He has also released numerous solo albums for adults and children , composed works for symphony orchestras, co-written a popular series of “Jim and Dave” family musicals and written music for theatre, dance and film. His original folk opera “Hardscrabble Road” debuted in 2003. His songs have been recorded by a number of other artists including The Cowboy Junkies, Melanie Doane, Hilary Spencer, Al Simmons, Ian Bell and James Keelaghan.

We are pleased to publish James’ book as our inaugral project. The book will contain fifty of James’ most requested songs and will feature additional material derived from in-depth interviews with James. The book will be available by January 2009, and pre-orders of the book make terrific Christmas gifts!
